2014 has not been a good year for humanity. The Global Peace Index has been on a downward trend since 2008, and this year continues to set troughs in the graph of how bad we can get. We’ve had brutality of the state, religious extremism, nationalistic extremism, suppression of speech, verbal, physical and sexual assault of the vulnerable (I am of course referring to our disgusting treatment of asylum seekers), and the impending collapse of shaky international relations dominate our world but not our discourse.
In light of all this, if you ever have the nerve to say “I don’t care about all that stuff, it doesn’t affect me”, you will be punched.
